Brad Pitt on the cover of Wine Spectator

WS063014_CoverUS.indd

On my flight to Napa a couple of weeks ago I had the chance to read the current (June 2014) issue of Wine Spectator.  The featured article is on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and their vineyard and winery.  The Jolie-Pitts, as they are now known, invested $60 million dollars in their Miraval project located in Provenance, France.  They partnered with the Perrin family for assistance in the vineyard management and wine making.  The first vintage of Miraval was released last year and surprised a lot of people by receiving critical acclaim (90 points WS) as well as fan fare.

The most interesting thing about the whole article is the transformation of Brad Pitt from Hollywood megastar into a rural farmer in France.  According to the article, Brad spend most of his time on the property now basically just farming and fixing things.  He discovered a retention wall on the property which was built in the 1200’s and has spent the last year or so painstakingly repairing it.

I have yet to taste any if Miraval’s releases, but I have noticed them at my local Costco, so I think I’ll give it a try.

2014 Taste of Howell Mountain Photos

The 2014 Taste of Howell Mountain was held at the Charles Krug Winery on Saturday, June 14th. Over 35 wineries were on hand pouring wines and guests were treated to some great finger foods. Guests also had a chance to bid on silent and live auction items. The live and silent auctions raised over $150,000 this year for the benefit of Howell Mountain Schools.

One of the most interesting items ever auctioned at the annual Taste of Howell Mountain was a barrel of Dunn Vineyard sourced wine. The starting bid on the approximately 23 cases of wine was $19,000. The winning bidder paid $22,000 for this one of kind item.

The turnout was a new record as well. Over 400 people attended, paying $125 for a ticket and as much a
s $250 at the door. Next year’s event is sure to be sold out well in advance, so get your tickets well in advance!

4.   Dine ALOFT with the Mondavi’s for 6 people
There are few vintners in the world that know more about Napa Valley than Marc Mondavi. Third generation vintner, his family has defined much of the things for which this legendary appellation is known.

Floating above Napa Valley at 1,660 feet of elevation, Marc’s Cold Springs Vineyard is farmed by one of California’s most sought after vineyard managers, Jim Barbour. It’s a gem of a location with soil profiles, slopes and elevation to make even the most stoic wine geek swoon.

Crafted from hand-selected fruit by Thomas Rivers Brown, ALOFT Cabernet Sauvignon is garnering a great deal of attention…and for good reason. It is a mountain Cabernet that’s terroir-driven, complex, lush and made in tiny quantities (less than 500 cases per vintage).

This is your chance to meet the people behind this special project and to get in on the ground floor of what promises to be among the best in the world of Napa Cabernet.

The winner of this lot receives:
•  a vineyard tour of Cold Springs Vineyard 1,660 feet above Napa Valley – surrounded by other famed Howell Mountain locations such as Dana, Abreu, and La Jota – followed by a family-style dinner for up to six people in Marc and Janice Mondavi’s family home

Arizona Stronghold Vineyards Announces Big Changes

Eric Glomski Assumes Control at Arizona Stronghold Vineyards

Arizona-stronghold-bottlesArizona Stronghold Vineyards (ASV)has officially confirmed the dissolution of the partnership between co-founders Eric Glomski and Maynard James Keenan.  The two formed their partnership back in 2007 and have both worked hard to build the brand and raise the profile of Arizona wines.  The label has won many awards at wine competitions across the country and was featured heavily (along with Keenan) in the 2010 film “Blood into Wine”.

Under the terms of the agreement Glomski will retain the ASV winery, brand, current inventory and the 160 acre Bonita Springs property.  Keenan will retain full ownership of the 80 acre Arizona Stronghold Vineyard which he has re-named the Al Buhl Memorial Vineyard.  Under the terms of the deal Keenan’s Al Buhl Memorial Vineyard will supply ASV with high quality fruit for the next 5 years.  This vineyard will also be the source of fruit for Keenan’s Merkin label.

Arizona Stronghold also announced that Corey Turnbull will be joining the wine making team along with Eric Glomski, Joseph Ranallo and Niles Johnson.  Corey is co-owner of Burning Tree cellars which recently received a 90 point rating from Wine Spectator for their 2010 Colibri Vineyard Syrah.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to rebuild Stronghold and guide it back towards its original, founding mission which was to bring Arizona wines to as many people as possible”  said Glomski in the recent press release.  He also stated:

“I’ve learned a lot in the last ten years about running vineyards and wineries efficiently, and I know that we have a real opportunity to continue making the high quality wines that our customers have grown to expect coming from the ASV label. With improvements made to the way that we manage the business and how our wines are distributed, we’re presented with an opportunity to make our wines available at a more affordable price point, both by the glass and per bottle.”

I’m Going Back to School

I’m Going Back to School…WINE SCHOOL!

san-francisco-wine-school-logoLast week I was contacted by the San Francisco Wine School to see if I would be interested in attending.  I looked into the program and it looks pretty interesting so I jumped at the opportunity.

Starting June 9th I’ll be taking the 9 week online CWAS (California Wine Appellation Specialist) course.  The course offers a guided approach to learning about all of the various wine regions of California.  Although the online courses is “at your own pace”  students need to complete their weekly segments on time.

San Francisco Wine School founder and CEO David Glancy

San Francisco Wine School founder and CEO David Glancy

The San Francisco Wine School was founded by David Glancy in 2011.   Mr Glancy’s wine credentials are spectacular:  He is one of only 211 Master Sommeliers in the world.  Not only that but he is 1 of only 12 Master Sommerliers to have also passed the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) exam.  But wait, there’s more.  He also sits on the board of Society of Wine Educators, is on the Editorial Advisory Board of Sommelier Journal.

The San Francisco Wine School exists to “provide world-class wine education and professional wine training”  To that end Mr Glancy has enlisted the services of 6 instructors, each of whom have their own amazing wine credentials.  ( see the list of instructors here)

That's a whole lot of wine tasting!

That’s a whole lot of wine tasting!

Now you might be thinking, hey how hard could online wine classes be right?  The “In Class” version of this course boasts over 60 different wines in 9 weeks, that’s a different wine every day from June 9th to August 3rd.  The online course’s  minimum requirement is only 16, but students are totally welcome to taste more!

So wish me luck, as I head back to school and this time – this school- I plan on finishing!

Keenan splits with Arizona Stronhold

Keenan Arizona Stronghold split

Maynard James Keenan

Maynard James Keenan

Last week the Arizona Republic’s Richard Ruelas broke the news that Maynard James Keenan and Arizona Stronghold had officially parted ways.  According to Ruelas, Keenan will acquire Arizona Stronghold’s southern vineyard and co founder Eric Glomski will keep the Arizona Stronghold brand and Campe Verde winery.

Eric Glomski

Eric Glomski

As for the reasons for the split, neither side is saying much other than there are differences much like there are differences in a band when a band breaks up.  In case you don’t know who Keenan is he’s the lead singer for the Grammy award winning band Tool as well as A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.  Keenan operates two wine labels of his own; Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards.  Both have won multiple awards at the annual Arizona Wine Grower’s Association Awards Banquet.

Eric Glomski is a rock star of sorts in his own right winning 10 awards at the Jefferson Cup in 2011

Hopefully they can sort out their differences and remain friends, because as wine drinkers will attest “Life’s too short to drink crappy wine”

Howell Mountain | 30 Years Above The Fog

taste of howell mountain 2014 poster

The 19th annual Taste of Howell Mountain is set to kick off at 12pm on Saturday June 14th, 2014.   If you are planning a trip to Napa Valley this summer I highly recommend you plan it around this event.  An amazing list of participating wineries will be pouring wines on the grounds of the historic Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena (Napa Valley).  Guests will enjoy wines from 35+ Wineries.  These wineries produce exceptionally rare and high quality wines.  Many of the wine makers themselves will be doing the pouring and interacting with guests.

The proceeds benefit the Howell Mountain Education Foundation.  Throughout the afternoon guests will get the chance to bid on silent auction items and enjoy various catering stations with yummy food.  The big finale is the live auction held inside the stately Carriage House on the Charles Krug property.  Guests will have a chance to bid on some truly amazing items.  Past years have seen items such as a 20 year vertical of Dunn Vineyard magnums and a personal lunch with Heidi Barrett. Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 27,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 10 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
